# Alpha memo: resveratrol exercise training translation boundary
**One-sentence alpha:** Resveratrol combined with exercise may protect stressed tissue in rodents yet may blunt selected training-induced cardiovascular gains in older men, suggesting the net direction is bounded by population and endpoint rather than uniform.

**Receipt 1:** "Resveratrol attenuated high intensity exercise training-induced inflammation and ferroptosis via Nrf2/FTH1/GPX4 pathway in intestine of mice" — 28-day swimming protocol in mice reported that resveratrol (15 mg/kg/day) reduced inflammatory factors and intestinal permeability markers associated with high-intensity exercise-induced gastrointestinal injury.
**Receipt 2:** "Resveratrol blunts the positive effects of exercise training on cardiovascular health in aged men" — 8-week trial in 27 inactive men aged ~65 reported that high-intensity training improved VO2max by ~45% (units per the abstract), with the abstract citing reduced training-induced increases in VO2max in the resveratrol arm versus placebo.

**Why this is surprising:** Receipt 1 made plausible that resveratrol rides alongside exercise as a protective adjunct in exercised rodents, but Receipt 2 reports a blunted exercise-induced VO2max gain in aged men, so the same resveratrol-plus-training anchor points opposite directions across these contexts.

**Caveats/falsifiers:**
- Receipt 1 is a murine intestinal-ferroptosis model at one oral dose and one swimming intensity over 28 days; Receipt 2 is a small (n = 27) human trial at 250 mg/day trans-resveratrol over 8 weeks in aged, initially inactive men, so species, dose, route, duration, and baseline status all differ and the moderator hypothesis (context vs. age vs. dose) is tentative and confounded by those axes.
- Decisive falsifier: a human trial in aged men reproducing the Receipt 2 dose and 8-week high-intensity protocol would refute Receipt 2's directional claim if VO2max gains in the resveratrol arm are non-inferior to placebo.
