# Alpha memo: resveratrol exercise training cross-context signal
**One-sentence alpha:** In mice, resveratrol co-administered with high-intensity exercise suggests attenuation of intestinal inflammation and ferroptosis markers, while in aged men the same anchor with the same training modality suggests blunting of training-induced cardiovascular improvements, a contrast that is confounded by multiple axes and does not isolate a single moderator.
**Receipt 1:** Resveratrol attenuated high intensity exercise training-induced inflammation and ferroptosis via Nrf2/FTH1/GPX4 pathway in intestine of mice (2023) — 28-day swimming protocol with 15 mg/kg/day resveratrol suggested protective effects on intestinal inflammatory factors and permeability endpoints in mice, with Nrf2/FTH1/GPX4 implicated mechanistically.
**Receipt 2:** Resveratrol blunts the positive effects of exercise training on cardiovascular health in aged men (2013) — 8-week high-intensity training with 250 mg/day trans-resveratrol vs placebo in 27 older men suggested a blunted cardiovascular response to training; the truncated magnitude figure is not included because the supplied abstract does not contain the full number and endpoint pair.
**Why this is surprising:** Receipt 1 makes plausible that resveratrol is a protective adjunct to exercise, whereas Receipt 2 updates that the same adjunct can counteract training effects; the labels are heuristic because many axes differ.
**Caveats/falsifiers:**
- Receipts differ on species (mouse vs aged men), tissue/endpoint (intestinal inflammation/ferroptosis vs cardiovascular parameters), dose (15 mg/kg/day vs 250 mg/day), duration (28 days vs 8 weeks), and age/status, so any "context-dependence" interpretation is tentative and confounded by axes beyond population.
- Doses are not directly comparable without allometric scaling, and even after scaling likely differ in achieved tissue exposure, so equivalence between interventions cannot be claimed.
- Sample sizes are small (mouse n per the swimming protocol of the receipt abstract, n = 27 men), limiting precision for each individual claim.
- The truncated "45" figure from Receipt 2 was omitted; a future replication in aged men measuring the same MAP/O2max endpoints with reported magnitude would directly falsify or confirm the blunting direction.
- Because the later paper (Receipt 2) is from 2013 and the earlier-direction paper (Receipt 1) is from 2023, the contrast is a heterogeneous cross-context signal rather than a direct replication.
