# Alpha memo: resveratrol exercise protocol mismatch **One-sentence alpha:** Receipts suggest that adding resveratrol to exercise may shift net effect from additive-leaning to null or attenuated, with the direction depending on population, dose, and endpoint. **Receipt 1:** *Resveratrol and exercise combined to treat functional limitations in late life: A pilot randomized controlled trial.* (2021, DOI 10.1016/j.exger.2020.111111, n=60, age 71.8±6.3) A 12-week walking+resistance program with 500 or 1000 mg/day resveratrol was feasible in older adults with functional limitations; the abstract reports safety/feasibility focus and does not establish additive functional gains over exercise alone. **Receipt 2:** *Resveratrol blunts the positive effects of exercise training on cardiovascular health in aged men* (2013, DOI 10.1113/jphysiol.2013.258061, n=27, age 65±1) In aged men, 8 weeks of HIIT + 250 mg/day trans-resveratrol yielded a 45% training-induced MAP improvement that was attenuated in the resveratrol arm relative to placebo (abstract uses "blunts"). **Why this is surprising:** Receipt 1 made plausible that resveratrol would pair cleanly with a mixed aerobic+resistance program in older adults, whereas Receipt 2 shows the same anchor attenuating an exercise-induced cardiovascular gain in a related but not identical population and modality — an analogous cross-context signal rather than a direct flip. **Caveats/falsifiers:** - Modalities differ (walking+resistance vs HIIT), doses differ (500/1000 mg vs 250 mg), durations differ (12 vs 8 wk), and Receipt 2 is cardiovascular/MAP while Receipt 1 centers on physical function; population sizes are small (n=60, n=27), so a single moderator (e.g., dose, endpoint family) cannot be isolated from the rest. - Decisive falsifier: an adequately powered RCT in older adults with functional limitations pairing 500–1000 mg/day resveratrol with combined aerobic+resistance exercise and measuring both physical-function and cardiovascular endpoints — a clean additive effect on cardiovascular outcomes would undercut the context-dependent-boundary read.
