# Alpha memo: skeletal muscle resveratrol exercise translation boundary
**One-sentence alpha:** A rat signal suggesting resveratrol augments training-induced strength and cardiac gains splits in aged men, where training but not resveratrol drives the metabolic and anti-inflammatory muscle signature.
**Receipt 1:** Improvements in skeletal muscle strength and cardiac function induced by resveratrol during exercise training contribute to enhanced exercise performance in rats (2012) — suggests that adding resveratrol to training may improve muscle strength, cardiac function, and exercise capacity in a rodent model.
**Receipt 2:** Exercise training, but not resveratrol, improves metabolic and inflammatory status in skeletal muscle of aged men (2014) — reports that 8 weeks of high-intensity knee-extensor training raised PGC-1α mRNA (~1.5-fold), cytochrome c and COX-I protein, citrate synthase and 3-HAD activity, and IκB-α/β protein, whereas 250 mg/day resveratrol did not reproduce these changes and showed no additive effect over training in 60–72-year-old men.
**Why this is surprising:** Receipt 1 made plausible a portable benefit of combining resveratrol with exercise; Receipt 2 updates that picture by isolating the human muscle metabolic/anti-inflammatory response to training alone, leaving resveratrol's contribution undetected on these endpoints.
**Caveats/falsifiers:**
- Species (rat vs. human), dose (unspecified rodent vs. 250 mg/day), duration, and endpoint family differ, so the moderator hypothesis (species/training status vs. dose vs. timescale) is tentative and confounded across axes.
- A decisive falsifier would be a randomized trial in older adults pairing training with resveratrol that shows an additive rise in PGC-1α, cytochrome c, citrate synthase, and IκB beyond training alone.
