# Alpha memo: resveratrol exercise cross-context evidence signal
**One-sentence alpha:** Rat anti-inflammatory signaling with resveratrol plus exercise suggests a positive effect that does not translate to aged men, where resveratrol may attenuate exercise-induced vascular and oxidative adaptations.
**Receipt 1:** "The Impact of Resveratrol Supplementation on Inflammation Induced by Acute Exercise in Rats: Il6 Responses to Exercise" (2019) aimed to evaluate trans-resveratrol plus training on inflammation-related factors in 64 male Wistar rats across exercise, resveratrol, combined, and control groups over 12 weeks at ~65% VO₂max with an acute bout at 70–75% VO₂max.
**Receipt 2:** "Resveratrol blunts the positive effects of exercise training in aged men; a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled training study" (2013) randomized 27 healthy inactive aged men (65 ± 1 y) to 8 weeks of 250 mg resveratrol or placebo with high-intensity exercise three times weekly and reported that resveratrol blunted training-induced VO₂max and hemodynamic adaptations.
**Why this is surprising:** Receipt 1 made plausible a clean anti-inflammatory benefit from adding resveratrol to exercise, and Receipt 2 updates that picture by suggesting those same gains may be reduced, not enhanced, when the same anchor is tested in aged humans.
**Caveats/falsifiers:**
- Receipt 1 uses male Wistar rats (n=64) under forced treadmill exercise; Receipt 2 uses 27 aged men on high-intensity knee-extensor training with a fixed 250 mg/day dose, so the species, dose, route, modality, duration, and baseline status differ across multiple axes and the moderator hypothesis (age vs. species vs. dose vs. training type) is tentative and confounded.
- The 2013 human study is the later paper and a clinical update of relevance, not a direct replication, and its small sample (n=27) limits power.
- No clinical, dosing, or supplementation recommendation follows from pairing a rodent antioxidant-exercise model with a small human exercise trial.
- A decisive falsifier would be an adequately powered RCT in aged humans testing resveratrol versus placebo on exercise-induced VO₂max, leg hemodynamics, and skeletal muscle redox endpoints; failure to replicate the blunting, or a positive interaction, would overturn the cross-context split.
