# Alpha memo: resveratrol endurance exercise cross-context evidence signal
**One-sentence alpha:** Resveratrol combined with exercise improves endurance and oxidative stress markers in aged mice but may add no incremental benefit beyond exercise alone on early weight-loss muscle adaptation in obese mice, suggesting the same anchor splits by population and endpoint.
**Receipt 1:** "Resveratrol and/or exercise training counteract aging-associated decline of physical endurance in aged mice; targeting mitochondrial biogenesis and function" — 18-month-old aged mice given resveratrol (15 mg/kg/day) and/or 4 weeks of exercise showed significantly longer time to exhaustion with decreased blood lactate, free fatty acids, and gastrocnemius lipid peroxidation, and increased antioxidant enzymes (catalase, SOD).
**Receipt 2:** "Early potential effects of resveratrol supplementation on skeletal muscle adaptation involved in exercise-induced weight loss in obese mice" — In high-fat-diet mice during a 4-week weight-loss period, exercise combined with resveratrol exerted no additional effects on body weight loss but improved whole-body glucose and lipid homeostasis and increased skeletal muscle mtDNA, cytochrome c, and PGC-1α relative to exercise alone.
**Why this is surprising:** Receipt 1 makes plausible a clean positive resveratrol-plus-exercise signal on endurance and oxidative stress in aged muscle, while Receipt 2 updates that the same combination can show no additive effect on body-weight loss and mixed muscle-endpoint outcomes in a different obese-mouse context, indicating the signal is not robustly transferrable.
**Caveats/falsifiers:**
- Receipt 1 is aged, non-diabetic mice at 15 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks; Receipt 2 is obese high-fat-diet mice over a 4-week weight-loss window with unspecified dose, so the contrast is confounded by species background, dose, duration, and endpoint family, and the moderator hypothesis is tentative.
- Receipt 1 (2018) and Receipt 2 (2018) are temporally adjacent rodent mechanistic reports with no direct replication between them.
- A decisive human-equivalence RCT showing resveratrol-plus-exercise produces no incremental endurance or functional benefit over exercise alone in older adults with functional limitations would falsify the translational promise of Receipt 1.
- No clinical, dosing, or supplementation recommendation follows from these two receipts.
