# Alpha memo: exercise training resveratrol metabolic skeletal
**One-sentence alpha:** In both obese mice and aged men, exercise training outperforms resveratrol on skeletal muscle metabolic/inflammatory readouts, but the gap may widen in humans where resveratrol alone appears inert.

**Receipt 1:** Moderate exercise training is more effective than resveratrol supplementation for ameliorating lipid metabolic complication in skeletal muscle of high fat diet-induced obese mice (J Exerc Nutrition Biochem, 2015) — In C57BL/6J mice made obese via 8 weeks of 45% fat diet and then switched to a low-fat diet, 8 weeks of treadmill running (30–60 min/day, 5×/week) improved skeletal muscle lipid metabolism more than daily resveratrol at 10 mg/kg, with exercise as the more effective intervention arm.

**Receipt 2:** Exercise training, but not resveratrol, improves metabolic and inflammatory status in skeletal muscle of aged men (J Physiol, 2014) — In healthy inactive men aged 60–72 randomized to 8 weeks of either 250 mg/day resveratrol, placebo, exercise + resveratrol, or exercise + placebo, exercise training increased PGC-1α mRNA ~1.5-fold, cytochrome c/COX-I protein ~1.3–1.5-fold, citrate synthase and 3-HAD activity ~1.3-fold, and raised IκB-α/IκB-β protein, while resveratrol alone did not produce these metabolic or anti-inflammatory improvements.

**Why this is surprising:** Receipt 1 made it plausible that resveratrol could at least partially substitute for exercise on muscle lipid metabolism in an obese mouse model, but Receipt 2 updates that picture in aged human muscle, where resveratrol's contribution appears negligible alongside a meaningful exercise response.

**Caveats/falsifiers:**
- Receipt 1 uses obese C57BL/6J mice at 10 mg/kg resveratrol with concurrent low-fat diet; Receipt 2 uses older (60–72 yr) men at 250 mg/day resveratrol with high-intensity exercise — different species, doses, ages, and baselines, so equivalence cannot be assumed.
- A decisive falsifier would be a human trial in aged or obese men showing that resveratrol alone (or added to exercise) reproduces the mouse-level lipid-metabolic gains seen at 10 matched tissue exposure.
