# Alpha memo: resveratrol exercise context boundary
**One-sentence alpha:** Resveratrol paired with exercise may be feasible/safe in older adults with functional limitations, yet the same pairing can suggest a blunting of training-induced cardiovascular gains in aged men, hinting that benefit is context-dependent rather than uniform.
**Receipt 1:** Resveratrol and exercise combined to treat functional limitations in late life: A pilot randomized controlled trial — a three-arm, two-site pilot RCT (N = 60, mean age ~71.8 y) randomized community-dwelling older adults with functional limitations to 12 weeks of exercise plus placebo, 500 mg/day resveratrol, or 1000 mg/day resveratrol, designed to evaluate safety/feasibility and to measure physical function and skeletal muscle mitochondrial outcomes.
**Receipt 2:** Resveratrol blunts the positive effects of exercise training on cardiovascular health in aged men — 27 healthy inactive aged men (~65 y) randomized to 8 weeks of high-intensity exercise training with 250 mg/day trans-resveratrol or placebo showed a 45% (per abstract) exercise-induced cardiovascular adaptation that was attenuated with resveratrol, suggesting interference with training-induced cardiovascular gains rather than an additive benefit.
**Why this is surprising:** A plausible expectation from Receipt 1 (pilot feasibility of adding resveratrol to exercise in older adults) is that resveratrol would aid or at least not hinder exercise adaptations; Receipt 2 instead suggests the same anchor can split by context, with the cardiovascular endpoint in aged men trending opposite to the additive/feasibility framing in functional-limited older adults.
**Caveats/falsifiers:**
- Receipt 1 is a small pilot (N = 60) feasibility/safety trial in functional-limited older adults (≈71.8 y) with 500–1000 mg/day resveratrol over 12 weeks; Receipt 2 is N = 27 inactive aged men (~65 y) at 250 mg/day for 8 weeks on cardiovascular endpoints — moderator drivers (age band, dose, duration, baseline function, endpoint family, sex) cannot be isolated, so the contrast is tentative and confounded.
- A decisive falsifier would be an adequately powered RCT in older adults with functional limitations using a cardiovascular primary endpoint and a dose matched to Receipt 2 (≈250 mg/day) over ≥8 weeks showing no attenuation of training-induced cardiovascular gains, which would undercut the boundary signal.
